California Student Assistance Programs
California students access loan repayment programs, work-study, and emergency aid through CSAC, college financial aid offices, and federal programs. The state also offers specialized support for foster youth and former foster students.
Cal Grant Program (Student Aid Package)
Maximizing Cal Grant eligibility reduces reliance on federal student loans for California residents.
What it provides: Combined state grants reducing need for student loans
Assistance: Grants from $1,094 (Cal Grant C for career tech) to full UC tuition coverage.
Eligibility: Cal Grant A, B, and C cover different educational paths including vocational programs.
Who may qualify:
- California resident undergraduates at eligible institutions
- Students with demonstrated financial need
- Community college, CSU, UC, and private college enrollees
Requirements:
- Annual FAFSA/CADAA renewal
- GPA maintenance
- Enrollment at eligible institution
How to apply: Renew FAFSA/CADAA each academic year by March 2 priority deadline.

Federal Work-Study (California Colleges)
California community colleges, CSUs, and UCs participate in federal work-study, often placing students in community service roles.
What it provides: Part-time employment funding for students with financial need
Assistance: Earned wages for on- or off-campus jobs; earnings do not count against future aid eligibility as heavily as other income.
Eligibility: Award amount set by financial aid office based on need and available funding.
Who may qualify:
- Undergraduate and graduate students with FAFSA-demonstrated need
- Students enrolled at participating California colleges
- Students able to work part-time while studying
Requirements:
- FAFSA indicating work-study interest
- Enrollment at participating institution
- Job placement through campus career center

Chafee Educational Training Voucher (California)
California supplements federal Chafee ETV funds and provides additional support services through campus foster youth programs.
What it provides: Grants for current and former foster youth pursuing higher education
Assistance: Up to $5,000 annually for tuition, books, housing, and living expenses.
Eligibility: Up to $5,000 per year in combined federal and state ETV funds.
Who may qualify:
- California foster youth ages 16–26
- Students who were in foster care on or after their 16th birthday
- Enrollees in college or vocational programs
Requirements:
- Documentation of foster care status
- Enrollment in eligible postsecondary program
- Application through CSAC or John Burton Advocates for Youth
