California Veteran Education Programs

California veterans use federal GI Bill benefits plus state-specific programs including the CalVet College Fee Waiver and tuition assistance at California community colleges. CSAC also administers veteran-specific financial aid resources.

CalVet College Fee Waiver for Veterans' Dependents

This benefit can save families tens of thousands of dollars over a four-year degree at UC or CSU.

What it provides: Waiver of mandatory system-wide fees at UC, CSU, and community colleges

Assistance: Full waiver of mandatory fees (tuition at community colleges, systemwide fees at UC/CSU).

Eligibility: Veteran must have been a California resident at entry to service or have been a resident at time of death.

Who may qualify:

  • Spouses and children of veterans with 0% service-connected disability rating
  • Dependents of veterans who died from service-connected disability
  • Recipients meeting income and age requirements

  • Proof of relationship and veteran's service/disability status
  • Enrollment at eligible California institution

Post-9/11 GI Bill (California Institutions)

California public universities and community colleges are popular destinations for GI Bill recipients due to strong veteran support services.

What it provides: Tuition, housing allowance, and book stipend for eligible veterans

Assistance: Full in-state tuition at public colleges, monthly housing allowance based on zip code, up to $1,000/year for books.

Eligibility: Benefit level based on length of qualifying service; in-state tuition covered at public schools.

Who may qualify:

  • Veterans with qualifying active duty service after September 10, 2001
  • Transfer of Entitlement recipients (spouses and children)
  • Members of Selected Reserve

Requirements:
